My favorite free music streaming apps & portals

You like music?
Then you might like this little overview of different platforms with FREE music related services for different purposes. This are the top platforms I am using more or less often from time to time around music. At the end of this article you can find also additional links with collections of other platforms where you could find other interesting services too .
Feature rich internet radio app for Andriod. Hugh amount of worlwide radio stations. Allows also recording of radio streams. You can surf through stations by country, genre or make your own favorite list. There are a lot of other Features so it's worth to give it a try. I use it when I am am running because the app works with my Samsung S6 in the background while
sport tracker is recording my running track in parallel.

Here you can get also recommendations based on your mood. In the search result you will find then a load of different playlists you can surf through. You can create also your own playlist where songs are linked then with youtube videos you cannot choose by your own. OK that's not so nice. There are also adds presented on top while you want to listen and that's for me a reason why it is not on top of my favorites. It's is nice for listening & to find then new songs.

After grooveshark was replaced ba GrooveMP3 and this site was also shut down I switched over to YouTube Music now and do my first steps there. At the beginning I noticed that YoutTube has already collected some data from my videos playlists which I my case is something I disliked as I could not start from fresh. However, the GUI is clean, fast and gives a good overview for new visitors. I am curios for what the recommendation engine will do for me since other platforms didn't satisfy me with my taste in past.

This site has a big amount of content. There is also an
app available which I used for a while. Later I found other better services but I still keep it in mind as an alternative. They have nice build in features on their site for social oriented people. However for my feeling the site response time is a bit too slow and needs improvement but maybe this is just related to the distance of their server location and my home.

This is another nice recommendation engine. Easy to use and quick. All you need is to enter an artist name to find similar ones. The search field supports you with suggestions as you type in the name. This is a nice service for me because I often find a single song & try to search for similar bands or groups with that music style. For me this is cool because I like visual interfaces.

This is a really a nice engine to search for specific artists and the ones similar to them. I'm using this site already for a while and like how fast the search is with the visual overview of similar artists. Here you can also prelisten to some of the songs from the choosen artist to get an impression if you like it - which is a nice feature. Beside the mainstream stuff I was positively surprised to find alternives from smaller countries as well. This site is really nice if you have some time to rummage for new stuff in your collection.

This is the biggest music platform I know all around. It's also well established since years on the internet so if you deal with it you should be sure that this will also exist in next years. I could not get right warm with their interface and maybe I should try at last once apps using soundcloud but however if you are searching for a commercial song on the internet and it does not exist at soundcloud you might find it also not anywhere else.

Recommendation platform. Enter the things you like & get recommended content. It supports not only music but also movies, TV shows, books, authors and games. You can also dive into the community to find users with similar interrests and check out their preferences. I use it already since many years to search from time to time for new things. You can surf through content & give them likes or dislikes etc. which is used to feed the recommendation engine. You can also see how others rated content.

I like YouTube for listening at home while I do some work and can watch partially music videos from my playlist. Depending on my mood i skip often clips which forces YouTube to show me advertising I cannot skip and this is not nice if you did not even listen to one complete song but have to watch 2 ads. Also if a clip is restricted or removed I often do not know which title it was so I could search for a different version. Good on YouTube is you find a lot ot songs also with different videos, having subtitles or beeing remixed etc.
