Location guides are almost dead

War between location sites allmost over!

Did you recognize it?

During late 2010's years there had been just a view of them around the internet with a global value.
Location guides!
Some of you might remember QYPE with their slogan 'Disover & Recommend' which was a hugh database of collected locations. It's popularity exploded around 2009 after maptheq.com put an interactive map over the locations similar to what google maps looks today.
Later QYPE was sold to yelp.com which lead then also to the shutdown of maptheq.com, the domain is now, a chineese website. If you follow the user activities & how up to date they are on yelp it's clear that they missed the train finally. Sites like foursquare.com gave a harbour to most user fleeing from other sites which worked fine for a while. But then came swarm and foursquare users had been forced to use the APP. The company blowed all user complaints in the wind and suddenly there was a real vacuum about useable location services.
The only exeption was TripAdvisor which looks now like an artifact in terms of usability and featuers in the smartphone area. During the time when all this happend, Google Maps growed up and enriched it's functionalities beside their strategy to get users on their boat by providing benefits. Benefits are meanwhile stopped but in western world there is no one else near to this No. 1 around:

...and their army of voluntary local guides continues to design the map how they want it; besides paying businesses.

Of course there is also a big amount of other map services, online and offline, filling some gaps on the market for a minortiy of users with special needs. But in terms of usability for desktop and smartphones, up to date user ratings, written reviews, tons of photos, people which check and correct entries; who else can provide that now?

What are your thougths, what's  next?
Artifical intelligence?

Is a David out there who is smart enough to fight against Goliath?
